Make your Canon Powershot camera work under Win2k3

Out of the box, the Canon Powershot software is not not compatible with Windows 2003 Server. But with some tweaking, you can make it work.

First, you need to install SSDP and UPnP services for Win2k3.

Next, make sure that the old Canon software is uninstalled.

Then, set the startup.exe install program on your Canon driver CD to load in WindowsXP compatibility mode. Run setup, and install ZoomBrowser ex, and photo stitch. I've found that version 5.8 does not run well under Win2k3, but that 6.x works fine, so at this point you may need to download and install an updater from Canon's website.

After rebooting, plug your camera in. The Canon software may load automatically. I found that I had to first open the Windows Control Panel for Cameras and Scanners and set Camera Window as the default action when my camera was plugged in.

After doing this the Canon software would load when I connected the camera, but clicking on the download images button did not work. A final step that I had to complete was to open the E:\Program Files\Canon\CameraWindow\CameraWindowDVC6 folder, and set all the EXE files to WindowsXP compatibility mode. I'm not sure this is necessary, since I discovered that some of the files had been set into Win2k compatibility mode from when I had been trying other methods to get the CameraWindow software to work. Win2k mode definitely doesn't work.

After those steps the Canon software works flawlessly. I can download pictures just fine, and all the Canon photo tools work just fine. In the MS event viewer tool, I do see the following, rather ugly message a lot, but I've never seen any actual malfunction:

Generate Activation Context failed for c:\Program Files\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX\Program\MFC80U.DLL. Reference error message: The referenced assembly is not installed on your system.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the detailed info.
I did all that and the Zoombrowser is ready, but for some reason the camera won't talk to the computer.
It's a Canon Powershot S2.

When I plug the Camera USB in there's a message about a new Canon camera device, but I can't seem to install it nor communicate with it.
Got any ideas?

Odd. The S2 is a pretty old camera, correct? It could be that the mechanism for downloading its photos requires a different set of services. All I can report is that these steps worked for me. You might want to check your event viewer logs to see if the SSDP and uPNP services started successfully.

Hello,

I'd like to thank you so very much for going ahead of me. I'm using Windows XP Pro x64 and everything you discussed works for me.

The only problem remaining (that I know of) is the "Raw Image Task" program won't install (as it complain I'm not running Windows).

One of the reasons I got the Canon G9 was because of its RAW images.

I'd love to know if / when you have a method to get this program also working.

I don't know, I've never used the RAW task program. But, you could try compatibility mode (right click on the installer and select properties, and then set the compatibility mode to an older version of windows).

This 720p Plasma TV from 2008 is very unique and quite nice in many ways. It used to retail for around $1300. If you can find one it's a great choice for retro gaming.  Overview/Image quality This is a plasma TV, which generally means at least the following: nearly infinite viewing angles, and jaw dropping weight. That's true in this case as well. This 42" model weights 75lbs.  At native resolution (720p) this TV crops 20 pixels off the top/bottom and 30 off the sides. 480p/i crops 20 pixels off all sides. Both modes have aliasing, too, though it's not too bad. There's really no excuse for aliasing on a TV this big: you know the panel was designed specifically to be a tv. Why not hit 720p exactly? And as for 480p/i, they could have at least offered a zoomed out mode with black borders and 1:1 pixel mapping. But no such luck. The piLagTesterPRO measures your monitor's input lag and response time. It is a cheap, full featured add-on to the Raspberry Pi; I provide the sensor and required software, you provide the Pi (a $5 pi Zero is more than sufficient). This 720p TV from 2007 is rather mediocre, with variable input lag, aliasing, and in general very little to recommend it for gaming, retro or otherwise.  Image quality Good upscaling is critical for retro gaming. Ideally, all pixels should appear equally sharp and bright (no aliasing), and angled lines should appear smooth, with no jagged, irregular steps. Also important is that the display shows most or all of the pixels it is sent. Often, this is not the case, with some number of pixels cropped from the bottom or top edges. Shockingly, these tests are relevant for modern gaming as well, because even at their native resolution many TVs have aliasing and cropping. The set has no options to adjust cropping/scaling. At least not without the remote. 480i/p is displayed stretched to 16:9. resolution aliasing cropping (top, side) 480p/i  mild  20, 30 720p  bad  30, 40 1080p  mild  40, 60 Aliasing is quite bad at the tv's "native" resolution of 720p. 1080p actually looks better
